Week 1


The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.

 Week one we as a class focused on motion and the syllabus. We were introduced to the concept of physics being present on the playground. We explored the concept of speed and how to manipulate it. We also went over the syllabus a bit. 

A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture. 

In Thursday's lecture, we talked about School of Wild and our syllabus. We talked about the School of Wild for the first fifteen minutes of the lecture. The School of Wild representative told us that we needed to pick between three different subjects they teach to kids that being the Wetlands, Praire, and Raptors. Then, she said we needed to read up on the material for that lesson and prepare questions for September 11's class when she would be in lab. After the School of Wild representative, we spent the reason of the class talking about class expectations and setup.

Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
What did you learn? I learned that understanding motion helps to predict motion. I also learned some random facts like how doctors have a special sonogram to watch blood flow and that the formula for speed is distance divided by time.
What was most helpful? I think that learning the formula for speed was probably the most important thing that I learned from the reading as I am assuming that we will continue to use it throughout this module of the class. 
What do you need more information on? I think I just need more information on everything about physics that will be applicable to elementary school as I do not remember much of my own learning of it from that time.
What questions/concerns/comments do you have? My only concern is that I feel like the physics part of the class is going to become a struggle for me later on as I have never taken a physics class before and I remember that Methods 1 got real in-depth in biology last semester.

  The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did. In lab, we reviewed more on  "Before the Flood" and then talked about the importance of students being able to read graphs. We also talked about coupled inquiry. Climate change seems more of an issue for island people because they are surrounded by water. One way climate change affects them is because it causes thermal expansion in sea levels which means the water rises. We, Iowans, are surrounded by land so people here pretend climate change is not an issue. Another misconception is that climate and weather are the same thing, but this is untrue. Weather is the current temperature and conditions, climate is 30 years worth of weather. One cool fact about climate change though is that Iowa City is in the top 100 cities for making efforts to prevent climate change. Week 10

The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did. In lab, we made a curve for our last test to be regraded on, talked about convention cells which I learned is how air fryers work, and recreated the rock cycle with starburst. An air fryer will send the air up to heat food.  For some of the starbursts we changed with pressure like the very top two, for the third one we used heat from a blow torch, and for the bottom one we melted two starbursts with a hot plate A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture. In Thursday's lecture, we learned that sand comes from distant mountains and landforms, not from the ocean floor. We also learned that rocks are naturally occurring mineral collections. Then we got introduced to earthquakes and volcanoes. We learned that Yellowstone is a super volcano that could destroy our continent or parts of the world, like in thousands of years. Week 2

  The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did. In lab, we tested different factors like slope, weight, clothing, and others that could change how fat one goes down a slide. My group decided to test how clothing impacts speed. We felt that thinner material would cause a person or object to go faster down the slide, but that no clothing would go the slowest. We found out that we were right. A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.  In the lecture, we learned about gravity and forces like friction. We were not all knowledgeable about the subject but then had a discussion and learned much more about how friction works. One example that stuck out to me was how a magnetic force will act against a gravity force. Like for instance, when I tried to use a magnet to put my roommate's calendar on the fridge the forces of the magnet and gravity were fighting with each other.
