Week 2

The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.

In lab, we tested different factors like slope, weight, clothing, and others that could change how fat one goes down a slide. My group decided to test how clothing impacts speed. We felt that thinner material would cause a person or object to go faster down the slide, but that no clothing would go the slowest. We found out that we were right.

A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.

In the lecture, we learned about gravity and forces like friction. We were not all knowledgeable about the subject but then had a discussion and learned much more about how friction works. One example that stuck out to me was how a magnetic force will act against a gravity force. Like for instance, when I tried to use a magnet to put my roommate's calendar on the fridge the forces of the magnet and gravity were fighting with each other. However, in this case, gravity won because even two of our magnets together were not strong enough to keep the calendar from falling to the ground.

Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading: What did you learn?

I learned that student involvement is very important in science and having them learn the processes to conduct an experiment is just as important as the experiment.
What was most helpful? What was most helpful was the article showing how Next Generation Science Standards are used in the classroom. I feel like I haven't gotten much exposure to science in elementary education as most of the time that I am in the elementary classroom it hasn't been for science lessons.

What do you need more information on?

Maybe some more information on how to create lesson plans that are engaging like the examples shown here.

What questions/concerns/comments do you have?                                                                                      I just found it funny how the kids organize their thinking like it feels like a rollercoaster reading the students' thinking about how the chips got to the beach.
