Week 13

The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.

In lab, we reviewed more on  "Before the Flood" and then talked about the importance of students being able to read graphs. We also talked about coupled inquiry. Climate change seems more of an issue for island people because they are surrounded by water. One way climate change affects them is because it causes thermal expansion in sea levels which means the water rises. We, Iowans, are surrounded by land so people here pretend climate change is not an issue. Another misconception is that climate and weather are the same thing, but this is untrue. Weather is the current temperature and conditions, climate is 30 years worth of weather. One cool fact about climate change though is that Iowa City is in the top 100 cities for making efforts to prevent climate change. Moreover, coupled inquiry is important because we want our students to ask questions and we want them to learn how to investigate their inquiries. We also want them to learn content from these investigations. Lastly, we learned how i, important it is for students to know how to read and create graphs, This is because they will probably have to use graphs in their education and lives to understand and communicate data.

A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.

In Thursday's lecture, we learned about the consensus gap and discussed some of the reasons why so many people are in denial about climate change. We also talked about carbon dioxide and how it is a big contributor to climate change. We also talked about what causes hot and cold climates, The acronym LOWER covers the main causes. These are latitude, ocean currents, wind and air masses, elevation, and near water.

LOWER:

latitude-distance from equator

ocean currents -the temperature of an ocean current affects the temperature of air that passes over it

wind and air masses-a large volume of air that takes on the climatic conditions of the area where it was formed

elevation-higher in altitude, colder in temperature

-air rises and expands because of lower air pressure

-air expands and cools

relief-topography

-when the mass rises to pass over topography like a mountain it expands and cools, cause precipitation on that side which creates a rain shadow on the other side

Near Water -Bodies of water keep air temperature cold and warm

Glacier retreat: is when glaciers melt and look like they move backward.

Albedo Effect: is when Sunlight absorbs darker colors.

Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:What did you learn? Ch 21

What was most helpful? The reasons why we should care about climate change was very helpful because it gave a lot of examples. Like how climate change leads to floods that impact our campus. That flood also affected my grandparents back in Stronghurst, Illinois.

What do you need more information on?

More information on how to argue for climate change may be helpful although we do discuss it a lot in class. Also more examples of what I could do to help slow down climate change.

What questions/concerns/comments do you have?

Mostly just what I said above, how to slow down climate change. We were actually discussing the methane under Antarctica at drill this weekend and that is a very scary thing.
